In its early days, Jacksonville was a small little settlement. It was founded in 1791, and was initially known as Cowford. That was because the settlement was situated on the banks of St. Johns river, and that was where cattle once crossed. In 1822, Florida was acquired by the United States from Spain. By then, the settlement has grown to become a city. It was named after the first military governor of Florida, General Andrew Jackson. General Andrew Jackson later went on to become President of the United States.
